There is a LOT of information out there to navigate it can feel overwhelming.  Some people find it useful to have lots of information and others prefer to limit their reading, here I have tried to compile a list of helpful books, websites and online support.

BOOKS

GUIDE TO CHILDBRITH - INA MAY GASKIN

Filled with inspiring birth stories and practical advice, this is an invaluable book.  The birth stories are helpful in reminding you that birth is normal and helps with your confidence.   It also has helpful information to help you prepare for your birth.

BIRTHING FROM WITHIN - PAM ENGLAND

Here is a holistic approach to childbirth that examines this profound rite-of-passage not as a medical event but as an act of self-discovery.  It explores great exercises and activities such as journal writing, meditation, and painting will help you analyse your thoughts and face your fears during pregnancy. For use during birth, the book offers proven techniques for coping with labor pain without drugs, a discussion of the doctor or midwife’s role, and a look at the father’s responsibilities.  Birthing From Within provides the necessary support and information to make each phase of birthing a rewarding experience.

THE POSITIVE BIRTH BOOK - MILLI HILL

This book really challenges negativity and fear of childbirth, and is over flowing with everything you need to know about labour, birth, and the early days of parenting.  The Positive Birth Book is the must-have contemporary birth book for women.  It breaks down everything about birth and its possible complications, always keeping a positive spin on even the worst case scenario.  The best bit about it is its FUNNY!

INA MAY”S GUIDE TOP BREASTFEEDING - INA MAY GASKIN

This is another great book by Ina May, its filled with helpful advice, medical facts, and more real-life stories that will help you understand how and why breastfeeding works and how you can use it to more deeply connect with your baby and your own body.

THREE IN A BED: THE BENEFITS OF SLEEPING WITH YOUR BABY - DEBORAH JACKSON

Deborah Jackson presents the family bed as an option parents have. A revealing look at how having your child sleeping in your bed is beneficial to all your family. All the concerns about the risks concerned with this arrangement are addressed in depth by "Three in a Bed." Concerns included: not killing the baby, privacy, weaning, and body temperature. Reading all the science, cross cultural references, psychology and developmental studies, a history of Victorian values, hospital policies, and personal experiences made it interesting.

WHAT MOTHERS DO: ESPECIALLY WHEN IT LOOKS LIKE NOTHING - NAOMI STADLEN

This book provides so much validity for mothers - Naomi Stadlen draws on many years' work with hundreds of other mothers of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. She explores mothers' experiences to reveal what they - and you - are doing when it may look, to everyone else, like nothing. If you are a mother, and have ever felt: that nobody understands what you do all day; overwhelmed by your feelings for your baby; tired all the time; that nothing prepared you for motherhood; uncertain what your baby seems to want; short-tempered with your partner; - you will find this the most reassuring book.
